Must-Haves for Tele-practice Comfort
I am so happy that we live in a time that technology can be used to serve as a platform for work during times like these. I am a pediatric SLP and the switch to telehealth has been a trying one. At this time, I feel pretty comfortable and confident in it. However, getting used to a new setting and routine wasn’t only taking toll on my mind but also my body. I wasn’t used to sitting and staring at a screen for hours on end. So I made some simple investments to help me (literally) feel more comfortable transitioning to telehealth. Here are my recommended must-haves for tele-practice comfort:
1. Blue Light Blocking Glasses
These helped a lot with eye strain and headaches caused from eye strain. I have a small face so I was skeptical that these would fit me appropriately. I liked this one, because they had a “small size” option, which fits my face very well. They also come in a nice case.
2. Headset
This is great for decreasing background noise. The SLP in me also loves this, because it decreases how much you have to raise your voice (good vocal hygiene!). There were a lot of expensive options for headsets. This one was a very reasonable price and I don’t have any complaints so far. I’ve been using these for about 4 months. The ears are padded and you can flip the speaker piece so that it is either on your right or left side. An added bonus is that your significant other will greatly appreciate this if you’re are both working from home.
3. Floor Chair
I just can’t sit at a desk all day. Since I work with children I was so used to sitting on the floor. It might be mind over matter, but this is much more comfortable when you are busy interacting in person…on the computer not so much. So I bought this floor chair which I love! Its so soft and its fold-able, making it easy to store. I also use it when watching movies…so dual purpose 😉 Tele-practice gold.
4. Lumbar Support Pillow
Last but certainly not least is the lumbar support pillow. During the first month of tele-practice I was suffering from lower back pain. This item saved me. I have an entire blog post dedicated to it. Check it out here: https://lifewithbecks.com/?p=365
