Mario Badescu’s Seaweed Night Cream Review

I’ve always been diligent with taking care of my skin and making sure it is moisturized. This is something that I grew up with and learned from my mother. It blew my mind that a lot of people don’t moisturize after they shower (–or wash their legs–I’m looking at you Taylor Swift). For me this was always part of the routine. The more we get older the more we realize that our moms were right and were taking care of us without us knowing it. Moms are amazing. It’s like they knew how we would be as teenagers (I don’t know about you, but I was stubborn and thought I knew everything! hahaha) and planned to instill these habits in us at a young age. Brilliant. So listen to your mom! Especially about skin-care 😉 Here is my honest review of Mario Badescu’s Seaweed Night Cream.

30 Flirty and Thriving: Skin Changes

I recently turned the big 3-0! As I transitioned to my 20’s, I changed what products I used on my skin based on its changing needs. So as I approached a new decade I thought it would be appropriate to switch and/or add new products to my skincare routine. In your 30’s your skin experiences many changes such as cell turn over begins to decrease and collagen and elastin breakdown faster. Basically that means that environmental and aging effects begin to show such as wrinkles, loss of volume, and uneven skin tone. Therefore, it is important to modify the products that you are using to cater to these changes.

One of the new additions to my routine was a night cream with anti-aging properties. I looked through some reviews and the Mario Badescu’s Seaweed Night Cream caught my eye as I have used other products from this line and have loved them. The “seaweed” component of this product is “bladderwack”, which is a type of brown algae.

So let’s start with the positives:

  • beautiful color.
  • pleasant scent.
  • contains collagen and elastin.

My experience:

I have been using this product for a little over a month. My routine is to cleanse, tone, and then moisturize my face before going to bed. I take a very small amount, maybe a little more than pea-size, and gently rub it onto my face, under my chin, and neck. For the first 4 weeks everything seemed to be okay and I was happy with the product. However, last week I had a bad reaction to it. Parts of my face broke out into tiny little bumps, which lasted for a few days. My first suspicion was the night cream, but I wasn’t fully convinced since I had been using it for weeks with no problems.

I stayed away from it for several nights even after my skin had calmed down and returned to normal. After a few more nights I decided to try it again. This time I used LESS than a pea size and the next morning my breakout was WORSE than the first time. My entire face and under my chin were covered with tiny bumps. Needless to say at this point I was done with giving the product chances and threw it out.

I read that you can develop an allergy to a product, so that is possibly what happen. Also, products respond differently to different skin types. I have primarily combination skin, but in the warmer months my skin presents more as combination-oily. A change in my skin might have contributed to this as well, but I am skeptical that my skin changed much from June to July.

What I did to help my skin:

Moisturizer

Of course the first thing I did was google what the heck was happening to my skin. The most frequent recommendation I saw was to use a product that is non-comedogenic, which means that is it formulated to not clog pores. The product that I switched to was Neutrogena’s Hydro-boost Water Gel with Hyaluroninc Acid. I haven’t been using this product long enough to give it a thorough review, but so far no problems. It has a nice smell and thin consistency. It absorbs fast into the skin and has a refreshing feel.

Exfoliation

The next thing I did was incorporate an exfoliator. This will help with cell turn over and promote healthy skin. However, there is a caveat to using any exfoliator: do NOT use it daily. This will strip your skin and end up causing more break outs. Most exfoliators will come with the suggestion to use them every 3-5 days. I try to stick to once a week. Instead of using a scrub I use a chemical exfoliator. The product I incorporated is the Pixi Glow Tonic which has glycolic acid.

Toner

I incorporated a toner that includes Witch Hazel as it has calming and healing properties. The product I used was Thayers Witch Hazel Toner with Lavender. This product also has aloe vera, which is also calming and healing. Although witch hazel can be helpful for skin issues; I’ve read that with overuse it can actually increase skin sensitivity. I’ve been using toners with witch hazel for years, but I use it VERY sparingly when my skin is irritated. For example, after I get my eyebrows threaded I’ll put some of this toner on my brow (by the way thanks COVID, looking like Chewbacca over here). So basically, it’s a product that I keep on the shelf for when it’s needed. When my skin is fully healed it will go back on the shelf. **I do not use this on the same nights that I use the Pixi Glow Tonic.**

Cleanser

Like I said earlier, I do like some Mario Basdescu products. One of them is their Acne Facial Cleanser containing salicylic acid. I’ve incorporated this into my nightly face wash routine and have slowly decreased it as my skin is clearing up. Like Thayers Witch Hazel, this is a product that I use when needed. I actually only purchase this in trial size, because it’s not my regular cleanser.

Overall recommendation:

My honest review of Mario Badescu’s Seaweed Night Cream. I am unsure if this product is non-comedogenic. It may not be the best product for those with oily or combination-oily skin. I have read positive reviews for this product. It may be more suited for a drier skin type. I saw many reviews list it as “nourishing”. For me, it felt a little greasy and heavy on my skin which could be contributed to skin type.

Also, when I told my mom that the product had seaweed in it; this was the face she made: 😮 So like I said, listen to your mom!
